The hockey world continues to show support for the Gaudreau family after Johnny and his brother, Matthew, tragically passed away last summer. Now, the Columbus Blue Jackets’ heartfelt gesture to Jane Gaudreau, Johnny’s mom, is melting fans’ hearts.
Johnny Gaudreau played 11 seasons in the NHL with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Calgary Flames. He was one of the most well-liked players and teammates in the league, and no one ever had a bad word to say about him.
On Aug. 24, 2024, Johnny and his brother, Matthew, were struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver, who was later charged with two counts of death by auto.
Blue Jackets’ heartfelt gesture
Since then, the hockey world has rallied around the Gaudreau family in various ways. During the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament earlier this February, Team USA honored Gaudreau by setting up a stall with a blue USA jersey bearing “GAUDREAU” and No. 13.
Earlier this season, several NHL teams invited Johnny’s father, Guy Gaudreau, to join practices as an honorary coach. Now, the Columbus Blue Jackets are taking their support even further with a touching tribute to Johnny and Matthew’s mother.
The Blue Jackets are currently hosting a Mothers’ Trip, where the players’ moms join the team on a road trip. This year, they invited Jane Gaudreau to be part of the experience, a gesture that has been widely praised on social media.
