Charlie Lindgren named player of the game after crazy own goal

The Washington Capitals managed to defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday despite Charlie Lindgren making one of the worst own goals in NHL history. Postgame, his teammates had the perfect words of support for him—but of course, they couldn’t resist taking a hilarious dig at the goalie.

The score was tied 3-3 with just over 12 minutes left in the game when Lindgren gave up an embarrassing own goal. He captured a loose puck in the faceoff circle, but instead of clearing it with his backhand, he fired it straight into his own net, giving the Lightning a 4-3 lead and Brayden Point his fifth career hat trick.

The Capitals didn’t give up, though, rallying with two unanswered goals to win the game on Thanksgiving Eve. Lindgren redeemed himself by saving all three shots he faced after the miscue. Postgame, his teammates and coach praised his mentality and resilience following the mistake.

Hilarious words after Charlie Lindgren’s own goal

The Capitals posted a video on X from the postgame locker room talk, and it was awesome to see the team show full support and appreciation for Lindgren.

“You help out your brother,” Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery said, clearly referring to Lindgren’s mistake.

“We don’t get rattled. Everybody just digs in and does a little bit more to bail them out. Men, great job.”

Then it was Jakob Chychrun’s turn to speak and present the player of the game award—something all NHL teams do after wins. He couldn’t resist poking fun at Lindgren for his own goal.

“Hey, hell of a job sticking with it. This guy, first NHL tuck tonight,” Chychrun said, making the entire room burst into laughter.

“But no, in all seriousness, buddy, way to stick with it,” Chychrun continued. “That’s a tough situation.”
