Take a bow, Evgeny Kuznetsov. The Russian former NHL superstar didn’t just score the most amazing goal of his career on Monday in the Russian top-tier KHL, but also one of the best goals hockey has probably ever seen.
Evgeny Kuznetsov signed a four-year contract with the KHL’s SKA St. Petersburg this summer. It was reported that Kuznetsov could earn as much as $12.7 million per season if he hits a few bonus checkmarks, and now, he’s really off and running with his new club.
Kuznetsov, who spent most of his NHL career with the Washington Capitals, has recorded 22 points in the first 24 games of the season, and on Monday, he stunned the hockey world by scoring a simply incredible lacrosse-style goal, with some even claiming it’s the first of its kind in professional hockey.
Evgeny Kuznetsov’s crazy goal
Players scoring lacrosse-style goals is nothing new; in fact, it’s happened a few times in the NHL over the last few years. However, these goals always occur with the player behind the net, wrapping around to get the puck into the goal. Kuznetsov decided to take it one step further.
Kuznetsov picked up a loose puck in the slot and, instead of going for a simple backhand shot like most players would, he lifted it with his blade and went for the lacrosse-style shot.
Amur Khabarovsk’s goalie, Viktor Kobozev, who was making his KHL debut, could do nothing as the puck sailed into the top corner of the net. To finish things off, Kuznetsov, of course, pulled out his trademark eagle celebration.
On social media, fans were absolutely stunned about the goal, with many claiming they’ve never seen anything like it, and that it actually may be the craziest goal ever scored. And we totally agree!
