It hasn’t been the start Pittsburgh Penguins fans had hoped for in the 2024-25 season, and now even Kyle Dubas’ grandmother has chimed in, mocking the general manager over a recent contract decision.
The Penguins have missed the playoffs for two consecutive seasons, despite elite performances from players like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.
Their 3-6-1 record through the first ten games of the 2024-25 season has fallen below expectations. Offensively, they’ve held up well, but their goaltending has been a major concern, with 43 goals allowed in just ten games.

Surprisingly, not even the San Jose Sharks—who have yet to win a game this season—have allowed that many goals.
To make matters worse, one of their goalies, Tristan Jarry, signed a hefty five-year, $26.88 million contract last year. Recently, he was assigned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL on a conditioning loan.
GM Kyle Dubas has faced criticism for Jarry’s contract, as the goalie has yet to prove he’s worth that kind of money. With the Penguins’ goaltending struggles, the extension looks worse by the day, and now, Dubas is even hearing it from his own grandmother.

When the Penguins announced on X that Jarry had been assigned to the AHL, Marietta Dubas, Kyle Dubas’ 88-year-old grandmother, responded, saying, “C’mon Pens, you’ve got to get it together. Time to realize time is moving on, and so should the Penguins!”
It’s rare for a family member to openly criticize an NHL general manager, and her response gained plenty of attention on social media. It’s certainly not a great look for Dubas, as the Penguins seem to be in for yet another challenging season with their top players nearing the end of their careers.
Now, only time will tell if Jarry can regain his focus and form during his conditioning assignment in the AHL.
