Roberto Luongo is one of the best goalkeepers ever in the modern NHL era. Now, in an unexpected turn of events, the Hall of Famer has made a surprise return to the ice – just to help a local beer league team in Florida, and it went just as you would’ve expected.
Luongo played his final NHL game in 2018-19 with the Florida Panthers. Today, he’s the Special Asst. to the GM in the Florida Panthers organization, but it seems like he’s still got it. A local team in Florida was in desperate need of a goalie in their game against the defending champions.
With no other options, they posted an advertisement on Facebook, asking for any goalie that might be available to play. But nobody expected a Hall of Fame goalie to reply.
Roberto Luongo said that he was available, and the team was shocked when he actually decided to show up to the rink ready to play. And he did more than just show up.
According to reports, Luongo played a really good game of hockey and helped the team defeat the five-time defending league champions with a 4-2 victory. Roberto Luongo was a real fan favorite both in Vancouver and Florida, and his competitiveness seems to have stuck around even after his retirement.
Roberto Luongo deserves all the praise for making this beer league team’s day, and what a moment for all of them – and even the team who lost – to play with and against one of the legends of the game. This is what it’s all about!
