Although we’re only a few games into the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the save of the postseason has already been decided.
In Game 2 of the series between the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning, Sergei Bobrovsky had his back against Matt Dumba, who had an open net in front of him.
But somehow, Bobrovsky managed to make himself bigger and stopped the puck with his forearm—without ever having a chance of seeing what happened behind him.
Videos of the acrobatic and frankly unbelievable save were everywhere after the game, and to say that it went viral would be an understatement. The Panthers also managed to win the game, taking a 2-0 lead in the series.
Bobrovsky had lunged himself to stop a shot from Nikita Kucherov, who decided to pass it to Matt Dumba instead of shooting.
Bobrovsky somehow got back up and with his back facing Dumba, stuck out his arm and stopped the backhand flick from the Lightning defenseman. Many said it was the best save they had ever seen.
But Wayne Gretzky, still the player with the most goals in NHL history (with Alex Ovechkin chasing him for the record), offers another perspective of what happened.
During a segment on TNT on Thursday, The Great One was asked what he would’ve done of the already classic Bobrovsky save.
And his response was hilarious.
”I might have scored,” he said, making everyone in the studio laugh.
”You have to bury that. You can see he kind off lets off the backhand. That’s why when you see an empty net, you still fire it through the back of the net.”
