There’s been some ups and downs in Alex Ovechkin’s season.
The Russian is on pace for 23 goals, which would be the lowest-scoring season of his career, but he’s also reached some incredible milestones. Just two weeks ago, he surpassed Wayne Gretzky for most empty-net goals in NHL history, and this weekend, he became the 41st player in league history to play in 1,400 career games.
Ovechkin has played in 96 percent of the Capitals’ games played since Ovechkin made his debut back in 2005. His 1,527 points ranks for 16th most in the league’s history, and only one player, The Great One, has more goals than his 838.
Ovechkin hasn’t scored in three straight games and had a quiet night against the Ottawa Senators on Monday. He had zero shots and zero points through 16:37 ice time. Ovechkin was also a -3 in the plus/minus, as the Capitals won 6-3 over the Senators.
But although Ovechkin didn’t get himself on the score sheet, he did have a hilarious moment with a referee that went viral on social media.
The game was tied 2-2 late in the first period as the Capitals looked for a go-ahead goal in a powerplay. Ovechkin was standing at the blue line as the Senators tried to get the puck out of their end, but when Ovi tried to stop the puck from going over the line, a linesman was in his way.
The linesman jumped over the puck, but it also led to Ovechkin having no chance of stopping it from going out.
Ovechkin’s anger towards the ref was caught on the on-ice mic, and he was heard screaming, ’Get out of the f—king way!’
On social media, everyone found the video absolutely hilarious.
”League has cranked the on ice mics this season and I love it,” one said.
”Hahaha I love how audible that was,” another said.
Some pointed out that it could be another Capitals player screaming at the referee, not Ovechkin. Either way, we love it when players’ screams get caught on the mics, and we get insights into what really goes on during the games.
