Things got heated between the New Jersey Devils and the Los Angeles Kings in Thursday’s matchup, and it led to a hilarious chirp from Jack Hughes. But afterward, he got absolutely roasted for it by NHL fans…
Things got testy between superstar Hughes and Kings’ winger Viktor Arvidsson in the second period.
Arvidsson hit Hughes in the head with a late elbow, and Hughes immediately went after him. Hughes isn’t most known for his hot temper or being a tough guy; instead, he often makes the headlines with nice goals and plays.
But this time, Hughes was sent to the penalty box for roughing, and Arvidsson also got a minor for elbowing but none for the following skirmish between them.
But things weren’t settled between Hughes and Arvidsson, and as they were sent to their respective box, they continued chirping each other, and Jack Hughes could be seen saying, “People pay to watch me play.”
The chirp quickly went viral on social media, but not everyone was a fan of it… Hughes is having a great season, but the New Jersey Devils are currently in a wild card race.
Many also pointed out that Devils fans don’t really pay that much for watching Hughes play.
”Devils tickets are $6. Relax, Jack,” one said on Twitter.
”People would prefer to pay to watch you win,” another said.
”And they have one of the lowest average attendances in the league…” a third added.
Some also pointed out that the context probably was that Hughes thought that Arvidsson tried to injure him and that people want to see him play, not sit out games for an injury.
The Kings got the last laugh in the game, as they would go on to win 2-1. The Devils had just tied the game 1-1 before Hughes and Arvidsson’s altercation, but with just a bit over five minutes left in the third, Quinton Byfield secured the win for the Kings.
