Since his first NHL season, Brad Marchand has earned a reputation for being the biggest rat in the league.
He did have his crown taken from him in The Athletic’s recent player poll, where Nick Cousins got the most answers for the question, ”Who’s the player in the league whose face you most want to punch?”
But Marchand came in at No. 2, and there’s just always something happening around him.
But in Tuesday night’s game against the Calgary Flames, Marchand was on the receiving end of a brutal cross-check from Flames’ Martin Pospisil.
Marchand had slashed goalie Jacob Markstrom, which brought Pospisil swinging with enough power that Marchand got a scab on his nose and a bloodied face.
Pospisil got a five-minute cross-checking major and game misconduct for his incident with Marchand. The B’s captain got a minor for slashing, but the Bruins failed to capitalize on the major penalty, with no shots on goal during the five-on-four power play.
In the third period, Marchand got hit in the face by MacKenzie Weegar’s stick, which caused his mouth to swell.
Marchand looked like a real hockey player postgame, but worse for him was probably how the Bruins couldn’t make the Flames pay for it, in a 4-1 loss.
On social media, fans made fun of Marchand for receiving a cross-check that drew blood, with many claiming it was pure karma.
”Should get a reward not a penalty for that,” one said.
”I think it’s hilarious Brad is angry at something he does a few times a game,” another said.
”Sorry, but Marchand getting Marchaned should not be a penalty,” a third added.
