There are many ways to celebrate a goal in the NHL. We love to see unusual and special celebrations.
But when Pavel Buchnevich scored an empty-netter against the New York Rangers on Thursday, he reacted in a way we’ve never seen before, and fans were so confused about it.
Jordan Kyrou scored a hat trick for the Blues in the 5-2 win over the Rangers on Thursday, but Pavel Buchnevich also had a great game, with one goal and two assists.
Buchnevich had several great opportunities to score earlier than he did, but the puck just wouldn’t go in. Buchnevich even had a great chance to score an empty-netter, but he missed.
But when he got a second chance to put it in the empty net, as the Rangers desperately chased a goal in the dying minutes, he didn’t miss.
But just looking at his reactions, you would probably guess that he did, in fact, miss.
As the puck went into the net, Buchnevich turned to the boards and smashed his stick in anger.
”First player in the history of the NHL to score a goal and then smash their stick in disgust. Rockstar shit,” the account Heatdaddy, with more than 250,000 followers, wrote on X.
Fans had no idea what made Buchenvich so angry, given he actually just scored, and the Blues were on their way to a three-goal victory.
But many thought it had something to do with how many chances he missed earlier in the game.
”Odd look. Unique player to be still upset from a previous play after potting a goal and sealing a win. Weird mix of self accountability and piss baby. Kinda like it,” one user said.
