Earlier this week, the Toronto Maple Leafs won over the Anaheim Ducks 2-1 in OT, and it was all because of Lukas Dostal.
He put up a performance for the ages, as he made 55 shots before Auston Matthews finally scored the game-winning goal to give the visiting Leafs an OT victory.
His 55 saves were a franchise record and a career high for Dostal, and one of the greatest performances we’ll see from a goalie this season.
And even his opponents, Auston Matthews included, were impressed by his remarkable game.
“It was a little bit (shocking),” Matthews said postgame. “You try and think ‘next one’s going in, next one’s going in,’ but he played a hell of a game and you have to tip your hat to him.”
But the Toronto media outlets weren’t as impressed. Toronto media is known for being harsh against both the Maple Leafs and their opponent, and other fanbases often criticize them for it.
But after the game against the Ducks, the Toronto Sun took things a step too far, by calling Lukas Dostal, who’d just put up a record-breaking performance, a ’no-name goalie.’
“Auston Matthews saves day in OT after no-name goalie vexes Maple Leafs,” read the headline from a piece by Lance Hornby of The Toronto Sun.
It didn’t take long for responses to flood in on the post, shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. The criticism mostly came from Leafs fans.
“I was shocked to see this wasn’t Steve Simmons tbh. What a ridiculous title lmao,” one said.
“Lol and this is why ppl hate Toronto media, what a joke of a title,” another said.
“Maybe you should leave your little bubble and actually start learning about other teams/players because Dostál is a big deal in Anaheim,” a third added.
“LOL no wonder everyone hates the Leafs so much… Can’t wait for the no-name team from Toronto to get run out of the playoffs in the first round again,” a fourth said.
The post from The Toronto Sun even got the Anaheim Ducks’ attention, and they weren’t happy about it. They took to X to slam back at the Sun for their comments about Dostal.
“His name is Lukas Dostal. He had 55 saves last night. He was NHL Rookie of the Month in October. Be better,” the admin behind the Ducks’ X account wrote.
The Ducks’ post gained a lot of attention, with more than 28,000 likes at the time of writing.
