It was a disappointing season for the New York Rangers, as their star players didn’t perform how fans expected them to in the first-round series against the New Jersey Devils.
The Rangers were eliminated in Game 7 of that series, and for goalie Igor Shesterkin, it was extra tough. He won the Vezina Trophy in the 2021-22 season but didn’t play up to standard last year, and his frustration was obvious to everyone during games, as he slammed his stick in practices and games more than once.
Shesterkin started the majority of the Rangers’ regular-season games. He had Jaroslav Halas as his backup goalie, but there’s a big change heading into the next campaign that’s only weeks away.
The Rangers have signed veteran goalie Jonathan Quick, a two-time Vezina Trophy finalist and a three-time Stanley Cup champion. Quick played ten regular-season games with the Golden Knights during the spring, and it’s expected that he’s the number 2 goalie in the Rangers, which might off-load some of the burden on Shesterkin.
Quick’s stats with the LA Kings last year weren’t that great, and he’s hoping to play more like his former self in the upcoming season. But no matter what, he’s probably rocking the most awesome bucket in the league. It’s always nice when goalies get creative with their masks, but ready for his new chapter, Quick let his kids decide what would be on his. And their answer was as genius as it’s adorable.
Per USA Today’s Vince Z. Mercogliano, Quick’s kids wanted the Rangers goal song on the back of his mask, so now, it just says, ’Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!”
Quick said ”it’ll be nice” to hear it, accordingly, and also added, ”it’s been a few years since I enjoyed it.”
