TVA reporter and NHL insider Renaud Lavoie has announced on Twitter that the Ottawa Senators have recalled top prospect Thomas Chabot from the team’s AHL affiliate, the Belleville Senators.
Chabot, a 20-year old defenseman from Ste-Marie, Quebec, Canada, was drafted 18th overall by the Sens during the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Chabot spent the 2016-2017 season with the QMJHL’s Saint John Sea Dogs, recording 35 assists and 45 points over 34 games. He also won the QMJHL championship last season as well as being the QMJHL Defenseman of the Year. Chabot was also named the MVP during the World Junior Championships back in January.
Back in September he received some high praise from Senators’ Captain Erik Karlsson, saying “I think he’s further ahead than I was.” Karlsson knows all about waiting for his shot to crack the lineup permanently. In his rookie season, he played 12 games with Binghamton before being called up to the NHL. Karlsson would go on to record 26 points in 60 games.
Chabot was cut from the Sens camp earlier this month but has gone on to record two points in two games in the AHL. With Karlsson still on the shelf, Chabot will get his chance in the team’s lineup.
