Wayne Gretzky is still the only player in NHL history to have his number retired by the league. He’s the greatest player of all time, and if you want to wear the number 99 outside the rink, it’s, of course, okay.
But if you want to wear the original 99 jersey, you’ll have to pay up—big time.
Last week, Grey Flannel Auctions auctioned the NHL jersey worn by The Great One when he recorded his last-ever NHL point. The shirt was autographed by Wayne Gretzky, and he wore it on April 18, 1999.
The day Wayne Gretzky recorded his 2,857th and final NHL point as a member of the New York Rangers. It was also Wayne Gretzky’s final game of his career.
From 2016 to 2019, the jersey was displayed in a museum at the Madison Square Garden, and this was the first time it was offered at an auction. And it broke records.
The shirt was sold on auction for $715,120, and it, therefore, became the highest-selling U.S.-based hockey jersey of all time, passing Mike Eruzione’s 1980 “Miracle On Ice” jersey, sold in 2013, for $657,250.
According to ESPN, it’s also the third most expensive hockey jersey of all time that’s been autographed.
First on the list of expensive jerseys is Wayne Gretzky’s final Oilers jersey, sold for $1.452 million, and second, Paul Henderson’s Canada national team jersey, which he wore during the 1972 classic game against the USSR, sold for $1.275 million.
